TMC pushes for renaming West Bengal to 'Bangla' during Zero Hour in Parliament
A political storm has erupted in West Bengal following remarks by Suvendu Adhikari, the leader of the opposition and senior BJP leader, regarding the newly built Jagannath Temple in Digha. Adhikari raised questions about the nature of the structure, asking whether it is a legitimate Jagannath Temple or merely a cultural center. His comments came after the temple’s recent inauguration and have sparked a strong reaction from leaders of the ruling TMC.
Suprakash Giri, the president of the TMC Youth Congress in East Midnapore, has responded to Suvendu’s remarks with a warning. Speaking in a public statement, Giri said, "If you say one more thing about the Jagannath Temple in Digha, we will block your car wherever it goes in the district." Giri's comments were a direct threat to Suvendu, stating that any further criticisms of the temple would result in interference with his movements within the district. The warning comes amid heightened political tensions surrounding the temple’s construction.
The Jagannath Temple in Digha, located in the coastal region of East Midnapore, was inaugurated recently under the leadership of West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. The temple is part of the state government's broader effort to promote religious tourism and cultural heritage. The construction of the temple is viewed as a significant religious project intended to cater to the local Hindu community. However, political opponents, particularly from the BJP, have questioned the motives behind the initiative and its potential political ramifications, especially ahead of the upcoming state elections.
Suvendu Adhikari's comments on the temple have raised concerns about its authenticity and purpose. The opposition leader has questioned whether the temple’s construction was primarily for religious purposes or if it was part of a broader strategy to gain political support from Hindu voters. His remarks have drawn sharp reactions not only from TMC leaders but also from members of the BJP, with accusations of political interference in religious matters.
